What is Course Commons?
Course Commons is a free community platform for the Caldas da Rainha, Óbidos, and Peniche areas. It is a shared space where families can find ateliers, workshops, and events, and where independent mentors and organizers can list what they are offering. Think of it as a digital notice board, organized and searchable, instead of scattered across WhatsApp and Facebook.
Is it free to use?
Yes. Browsing, signing up for events, and creating a basic account are all free. Mentors who list Courses and Ateliers through the platform may charge their own fees for their offerings, but Course Commons itself does not charge families to use the site.
What is the difference between a Course, an Atelier, and an Event?
A Course or Atelier is a structured program with a set number of sessions, a defined group, and a commitment window. You sign up before it starts and attend for the duration. An Event is something posted by a community member that they manage independently. Some events require sign-up, some are drop-in, some are ongoing. Course Commons shares the details but the organizer handles everything else.
Who can post on Course Commons?
Anyone with a free account can post an Event. Posting a Course or Atelier requires a Mentor application, which we review before approving. This is to keep the community trustworthy and safe, particularly for offerings involving children.
Who are the mentors?
Mentors are independent educators, facilitators, coaches, and community members who have applied and been approved to list Courses and Ateliers through the platform. They set their own content, pricing, and schedules. Course Commons is not their employer and does not endorse the specific content of what they offer.
Is Course Commons a school?
No. Course Commons is a coordination and discovery platform. It does not operate any courses itself, does not employ teachers, and is not registered as an educational institution. The people offering things here are independent community members.
How do I know the mentors are trustworthy?
All mentors go through an application process before they can list Courses or Ateliers. We ask about their community connections, experience, and planned location. We also reserve the right to remove listings or accounts if concerns arise. That said, Course Commons is a community tool, not a regulatory body. As with any community offering, we encourage families to use their own judgment and ask questions directly.
What if something goes wrong with a course or event I signed up for?
For Courses and Ateliers listed through Course Commons, contact the mentor directly first. If you cannot resolve it, get in touch with us and we will do what we can to help. For Events, the organizer handles everything independently and Course Commons is not involved in the transaction.
Can I post something even if I am not a qualified teacher?
Yes. Many of the best offerings in this community come from people sharing skills they have developed through life, work, or passion rather than formal credentials. What matters is your connection to the community and your commitment to showing up well. Apply as a Mentor and tell us about yourself.
What is Ancora?
Ancora is a community of kids and families in the Óbidos area organized through Course Commons. It has its own code of conduct and meets across various spaces. You can find out more on the Ancora page.
I have a space that others could use. Can I list it?
Not yet as a standalone feature, but this is coming. In the meantime, mention it in your Mentor application or get in touch directly and we will connect you with mentors looking for a space.
